WISHING ALL OUR MEMBERS, SUPPORTERS AND FRIENDS A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Having moved to our new home, 2015 is going to be a very important year for The Racehorse Sanctuary. We rely totally on voluntary support and donations to fund our work in the rehabilitation of ex-racehorses.

Fundraising is vital to our very existence and 'every little helps', from pennies donated in our collection boxes, to large scale charity events such as our Racing Days and The Thoroughbred Ball - and we could not fund our work without the time and generosity of our supporters.

Our Trustees are keen to explore new ways of raising money to help our horses and would love to hear from you about the type of event you would be prepared to support or help with: fundraising events you have enjoyed put on by other organisations or other ideas you may have for raising money. Fundraising can be fun and a great way to make new friends and get involved with our lovely horses. We understand that not everyone has the time to put on an event but please spare a little time to think of our horses' future and the ways in which you can help us to help them.

Please email us your ideas, or visit our DONATE page to pledge your support directly.

FIRST MAJOR FUNDRAISING FOR 2015: OUR FONTWELL PARK RACEDAY

Many of our traditional supporters will have received postal invitations to our Charity Lunch and Auction at Fontwell Park on Sunday 22 February 2015.

Fontwell's National Spirit Hurdle Day has become a firm favourite in our fundraising calendar and this year's event promises to be great fun. We have some great auction items lined up to tempt you. On-line booking is now open through the Racecourse website.

Go to their home page; then click on 'Racing'; click on 'Fixtures'; click on 'Feb'; click on '22nd Feb'; click on 'Buy Tickets'; click on 'Hospitality Packages'. Failing this, if you are still experiencing difficulties making your booking, or if you simply prefer to speak to a person, please phone Claire Hogben on 01243 543335; Claire will accept telephone bookings for you.

Do come and join us for a great day out with family and friends.

RECENT PHOTOSHOOT AT STILEMANS

Horse photographer Emma Hughes spent a morning with us at the centre taking shots of several of our inmates including Zelensky (Zelly), Eastern Scarlet (Harry), Secret Jewel (Sweet Pea) Olympic Express (Olly) and Repton (Tony). All behaved extremely well, but needless to say both Harry and Olly took full advantage of the situation and did what they do best, posing enthusiastically. Some fun shots were also taken of Second Paige (Sprout) playing with the hose pipe; we cannot wait to see these.

Emma is kindly donating the pictures to the centre to be used as either auction items or prizes at any of our functions and will also allow take a professional picture of any horse that is sponsored to give to the person sponsoring. A percentage of the profits will also be donated to the centre for any individual photos sold at our events. Emma has also generously donated a private photo shoot of a horse or family pet, for us to use as an auction item. Do check out Emma's website as she is a very talented lady; see: www.horsephotographeruksurrey.co.uk.

WELCOME TO A NEW SUPPORT GROUP MEMBER

Mrs B. Joy Robinson from Herefordshire recently joined our support group, an absolute lifeline for the charity, as the group allows us to budget and think ahead regarding funding. The group is gradually growing, but between us I feel sure that we can encourage more friends a family to join up and become active members. Thank you Joy for your support.

THE IMPORTANCE TO US OF LOCAL VOLUNTEERS

Thankfully all of our horses at the centre are in good health and considering the time of year are coping with the extreme weather really well.

However, it is a different story as far as the humans at the centre are concerned; since early December poor Sue has suffering from a problem, which has left her on crutches for the time being.

She valiantly refuses to accept this limitation on her mobility and continues to hobble around the yard all day, including late stables at 11pm, taking temperatures and haying the horses. On top of this, three of our best girls: Ruth, Karen and Tanya, who have been working four days a week for us, recently found that the yard where they keep their own horses has contracted strangles.

This meant that we could no longer risk them coming to the centre, for the time being, leaving us desperately sort of staff. On the positive side Helen and her son Harvey, Julie and Sally and her mother Clare are all stepping in an a voluntary basis to help us through this difficult time. Thank goodness for the kind heartedness of these supporters: your help is greatly appreciated.

PROGRESS TOWARDS OUR NEW MÉNAGE

Soon as the weather allows, it will be all systems go on establishing our new ménage at Stilemans. This will enable us to gradually make a start on taking in some of the many potential riding horses that have been waiting to join us.

Such a facility is very important for our work with new arrivals, particularly youngsters who may lack confidence on their own, helping them feel so much more secure within the perimeters of a ménage, when starting their new careers without their former equine friends surrounding them. It will also allow us to investigate any potential star qualities that new arrivals may have, in order to decide where a horses future may best lie.
