SANDOWN PARK RACEDAY NETS APPROX £40,000 FOR SANCTUARY FUNDS

Our most important fundraising of the year took place at Sandown Park Racecourse on Wednesday, 16 September 2015, sponsored by our major partners St. James’s Place Wealth Management.

Thanks to the determined efforts of the team at Stilemans, with enthusiastic hands-on support from SJP’s Max Patel and her team, the event comprising a Champagne Reception followed by Charity Auction and an afternoon’s racing, went with a real swing, despite damp condition for horses and jockeys! We were lucky enough to have among our special guests: trainers Chris Gordon, Bill Smith and Lawrence Wells; the author Felix Francis and none other than John Francome himself, not to mention Colin Brown who acted as auctioneer for us, as well as providing us with some excellent betting tips.

An innovation this year included an appeal by Patron, David Ray, for the Sanctuary’s new "Emergency Veterinary Fund" and, in particular, for the ongoing treatment for Wavertree Warrior who has serious foot problems. We raised £1,700 for the Appeal so “Thank You” very much to all our guests for their generosity.

With enthusiastic bidding for a great selection of auction items such as holidays in Mustique, Anglesey and Derbyshire, a day with Channel 4 Racing and a visit to Coolmore Stud in Ireland, the event raised a very welcome £40,000 towards Sanctuary funds.

SANDOWN AUCTION ITEM: MORNING ON THE GALLOPS - VISIT TO ROBINS FARM RACING

One of the prizes that was up for auction was won by David & Barbara Ray who were joined by their friends for a morning on the gallops at Robins Farm Racing where they saw the current star of the yard "Lightning Spear" riding out.

The prize included a champagne breakfast and a tour of the fantastic facilities at the yard - thank you to both Hetta & Olly Stevens for donating this prize.

RAISING THE SANCTUARY'S PROFILE AT THE SURREY GAME AND COUNTRY FAIR

Our thanks go to the team who manned our stand at the Surrey Game and Country Fair at Loseley Park on Sunday, 27th September in the glorious sunshine.

There was a great deal of interest in the work of the Sanctuary and many new contacts were made throughout the day.

Plenty of merchandise was sold including this year’s super Calendar and Christmas Cards. We also held a raffle with a first prize of two tickets to the Premier Enclosure at Fontwell Park Racecourse.

Something new to watch out for in 2016....we are aiming to put our “Show on the Road” in and around Surrey & Sussex to raise awareness and much needed funds for our charity and will be looking for volunteers to help out at such events....if you would like to be one of our “Local Heroes” please contact Sarah in the office either by Email: info@racehorsesanctuary.org or Tel: 01483 428961.

UPDATE ON THE HORSES AT STILEMANS

Having been grazing happily in her paddock a few days earlier Ziguara was (we think) stung on her upper lip. The result was a nasty swelling which started to increase in size, as did the sensitivity, making it all but impossible for poor Ziggy to eat properly.

After several days of being flushed through with Pevidine and a course of antibiotics the swelling decreased leaving a very tender sore. You can imagine when at its worst just how painful this must have been!

Poor old Ziggy at the age of 27 years did not deserve this, but still she can at least eat again, remains her feisty old self and simply soldiers on regardless. Hopefully keeping it clear of any infection this wound will in time close over and Ziggy will be back to her beautiful self.

On a positive note, Try having come through recent keyhole surgery on his hock joint is coming along in leaps and bounds, at times literally as he is feeling so good in himself. Currently being lead out in hand twice every morning and then being turned out in a specially built small paddock alongside his best mate Oats in the afternoon, Try is well on the way to a full recovery. Thank goodness as he is a very special horse.

OUR NEXT EVENT IS ON SUNDAY 25TH OCTOBER - LAST CHANCE TO BOOK YOUR TICKETS FOR "DARK HORSE" NOW!

Last month we published Kate Humble’s advice to make your weekend a success, by going to see the film Dark Horse.

This heart-warming story, of the thoroughbred racehorse Dream Alliance and the engaging mix of characters that constitute his connections, records the triumph of the underdog against adversity and the big guns.

Dream Alliance had a challenging racing career, but his connections have made sure he is now well-cared for; so well in fact he has been able to play himself in the film.  Come and enjoy the ups and downs of his story, and at the same time support The Racehorse Sanctuary in the wonderful work they do for other ex-racehorses.

Please support our very own charity screening on Sunday, 25 October 2015 at 11:00 am at the Clapham Picture House.

All proceeds will be donated to The Racehorse Sanctuary.

Plan your family day out in London: Book your tickets HERE now.
