Walthamstow Gala Evening

Saturday 19th July saw our first attempt at organising an evening at the dogs when we took over the Goodwood Box at Walthamstow Stadium in Chingford, London for a party of 50 people.
For many weeks prior to the event our dedicated committee consisting of myself, Sue, Anne Azlett, Gaynor Renwick, Linda Thompson, Kirstie Bray, Jill Hollamby and Beccy Green were working away behind the scenes drumming up interest and support for the event which paid dividends with the final outcome. Our sincere thanks go to all of the above for the huge effort they all put in.
On the night all races were sponsored, there were several quality items for the silent auction, the trap challenge was fully supported and the raffle ticket sales were good. The only thing lacking was the number of tickets sold which ended up at forty-nine.
Looking back with hindsight I think the main problem had to be the location as for most of our support group members it was a considerable journey combined with a very late night, the later really hitting home for Sue and I having climbed into bed at around 1.45am only to be back on the yard again at 6.30am the following morning.
Never the less all those who came along to support had a super time with excellent food, plenty of exciting racing and some very useful information and tips provided by our Master of Ceremonies none other than Mr Jonathan Hobbs of the Racing Post and Sky TV.
After the fourth race was the highlight of the evening for me as Glamanglitz came out of retirement for one evening only to parade on behalf of the charity. His owner and one of our patrons Julie Routledge-Martin travelled him all the way down from Derbyshire so that he could show off to the crowd and that he certainly did, having been turned out absolutely magnificently by the four girls who made the long journey down with him, a big thank you goes to all concerned with this lovely old horse.
Overall the evening raised a magnificent £3,100 for the centre which is very much needed at this time with the impending relocation looming.
