Sir Alfred Munnings Museum Open Day By Lady Elizabeth Huntly
On August Bank Holiday Monday 2007 Pam Tetley and Lizzie Huntly collected Wavertree Boy, otherwise known as Norbert from the centre and, assuring Graham and Sue that we would take good care of him, we set off for our destination of Sir Alfred Munnings home and museum at Dedham in Suffolk.
We arrived in good time and were greeted by Diane Roe who is the museum administrator and had arranged this visit to help raise funds and awareness for the centre.
Norbert was settled in a lovely old fashioned stable where Sir Alfred and Lady Munnings had kept their horses and indeed Sir Alfred used to go and sketch and paint in this wonderful setting. Pam and I set up our stand and Norbert groomed and made ready for his visitors!
We had a fairly steady flow of people coming to see what the Racehorse Sanctuary is all about and Norbert thoroughly enjoyed a great deal of attention. Luckily the sun shone hence people were quite happy to venture up to the stables! Several of the visitors were involved with the Wavertree Racing Syndicate and were delighted to see Norbert again. The day ended with a raffle being drawn and we managed to raise a respectable £100.
Pam and I enjoyed a lightning tour of the fabulous paintings in the museum before loading Norbert into the horsebox and setting off back home.
It has to be said that Norbert behaved impeccably well throughout the whole outing and managed to consume a huge amount of hay and Polo’s.
