Staff at GWR's Oxford Station have a fantastic scheme for raising funds for charity with a small bookshop on Platform 4; a Book Nook really. Passengers waiting for trains are invited to donate to the charity of the month, when they chose any of the books to borrow or retain. Charities to benefit are chosen by ballot from suggestions put forward by staff at the station. With a high footfall, this scheme is a real money-spinner and a huge morale booster for staff, when they see what they have achieved for good causes, encouraged by a generous top-up by the operating company.

Fontwell Park Racecourse today launches their marketing campaign for the 52nd running of The National Spirit Hurdle, the most prestigious race in Fontwell Park’s calendar. For 2017 this race is sponsored to the tune of £50,000 by Totesport and the Arena Racing Company has again added £30,000 to the feature race of the day making a very attractive £80,000 prize pot. Named after the dual winner of the champion hurdle in the 1940s, this is Fontwell Park’s only Class 1 race, the centrepiece of an excellent card of seven races on Sunday 26 February 2017, at the only figure of eight jumps course in the UK.
We are also delighted to announce that The Racehorse Sanctuary will be holding our next major fundraising event that day at Fontwell Park, continuing our long association with the racecourse on National Spirit Hurdle Day.
